New Dawn
A word with Director/Producer, Matt Morreale

My life has always been about being creative. I like to live life itself in a creative way - my beliefs and way of life - always open to the beauty and mystery, usually lying just under the surface of things. I played music for many years, always with the idea of joining live performance with other art forms. Film for me, is the ultimate creative, collaborative, art form. It has everything.

Eventually I decided that I really did hate my day job and was going to make a real and lasting change. I immediately starting soaking up all the information I could about the film industry and began wedging my foot in the door.

Now, after two years I've had the opportunity to work with some great people, on various films, in a number of different positions. My goal has always been to learn as much as possible about the entire process of film making - from conception to distribution - and so I've pursued as many different experiences as I could.

I've worked in both the sound and camera departments. Before that, though, I had tried running in Soho. Soho is the area of London where it's all going on, but I saw that it was going to take an undefined amount of time to eventually get to where I'd be working on others' films, whether I wanted to or not. Film, as a medium, is so powerful, and I just couldn't accept working on pictures I didn't think were good to put out in the public. I didn't want the karma. I guess that's a real personal thing.

Anyway, as my ambition has always been to express myself on screen, or in sound, it seemed far better to just call myself a producer and go do it. Of course this can be a real catch 22 situation; especially in the beginning. You want support (monetary or whatever), but you need something to show - but how are you going to have something worth showing without the support. A New Dawn has been my way through the catch 22.

I basically just decided to make it no matter what. I didn't have any savings, but had a few hundred quid extra in a months paycheck. I made sure the money was spent on a decent camera with good lenses and lighting, then good food to keep everyone happy and just did my best.

My actors were great and I had full confidence in them to deliver. I only needed to make sure that technically everything was right.

My collaboration with Jacob has been great. We met over email, as I live in the UK. We've got very similar ideas about the types of films we want to make - the things we want to say. He's such a writer. I could suggest a change or an idea and he'd have it in the script within 30min.

A New Dawn is in post right now. I've taken on the task of editing as I love the creative process, and if I'm going through all the effort to get the thing made, I don't want to miss out on all the fun. I wouldn't take a position on the film, though, if I thought that it would suffer from a lack of experience on my part. I'm always dedicated to learning, so I like to take these things on.

I think the main thing is to be confident in your vision, stick to it, and don't let anyone convince you that what you believe is not realistic. Just go do it. I think reality, God, , the universe, whatever you want to call it, reciprocates with those
who sincerely ask. Life is truely a mystical event; no one can stop
that. Dream and then put it into action.
